Meeting of European experts on media literacy featured the participation of Fernanda Bonacho
The Council of Europe’s Steering Committee on Media and Information Society (CDMSI) organized a meeting of European experts on media literacy and media education, on May 22 and 23, in Paris.
One of the guest participants was Fernanda Bonacho, professor at the School of Communication and Media Studies (ESCS), at the Polytechnic University of Lisbon (IPL) and holder of the UNESCO Chair in Communication, Media and Information Literacy and Citizenship, at ESCS-IPL.
The aim of the seminar was to help identify essential aspects to be included in national media education strategies and to define indicators for evaluating media literacy initiatives.
The meeting also discussed practical guidelines from the Council of Europe for alignment with the various standards, policies, studies and activities designed to improve media and information literacy in Europe. The Recommendations published since 2014 address issues such as online safety, media pluralism, transparency of media ownership, children’s rights in the digital environment, freedom of expression, disinformation and hate speech.
“A truly energising exchange. Looking forward to the next steps in shaping this important guidance”, said Maja Zaric, Chair of the CDMSI, on her LinkedIn profile.
All the information will now be provided to the member states of the Council of Europe so that they can consider applying it in the context of their national plans and actions on the ground.
