In memory of Professor João Abreu, co-holder of the ESCS UNESCO Chair

The UNESCO Chair of Communication, Media and Information Literacy, and Citizenship (LIACOM/ESCS) team expresses its profound sadness and heartfelt sorrow at the passing of Professor João Abreu, co-holder of the ESCS UNESCO Chair, researcher at LIACOM and professor at the School of Communication and Media Studies (ESCS), and extends its heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues.

Professor João Abreu’s work was deeply aligned with UNESCO’s core ideals, promoting dialogue, mutual respect, and the participation of all in building more just, tolerant, pluralistic, and democratic societies.

He was distinguished by his dedication to others, his ability to listen with care and sensitivity, his attentive view of the world around him, and his deep respect for landscape and nature.

His personal and professional example will remain in the memory of all who had the privilege of knowing and working with him, continuing to inspire us in upholding the human values he believed in and embodied so exemplarily.

“The landscape is shaped by everyone, all the time. We are all landscapes, and the landscape is made by everyone.”
