7 Days with the Media return to discuss human rights in the digital context

The 14th edition of the 7 Days with the Media initiative is dedicated to the theme “Direitos Humanos: em rede ou sem rede?” and, as usual, it will take place from 3 to 9 May.

The initiative invites a reflection “on how human rights are upheld or undermined in a digitally connected world”, at a time marked by digital platforms and algorithms that shape much of our interactions, decisions and access to information, as stated on the official 7 Days with the Media 2026 website. “It is urgent to reaffirm fundamental values such as respect, diversity, equality, dialogue and a culture of peace,” the introductory text adds.

Promoted annually since 2013 by GILM – the Informal Group on Media Literacy, the initiative seeks to give visibility to actions organised across the country with the aim of strengthening citizens’ competences in their relationship with the media.

GILM is an informal group dedicated to promoting media literacy in Portugal, bringing together 15 institutions, including the School of Communication and Media Studies (ESCS), as well as a guest expert.

Symbolically, the 7 Days with the Media initiative is expected to be most active between 3 May (World Press Freedom Day) and 9 May (Europe Day). However, actions taking place between April and June 2026 may also be associated with the programme by completing the participation form.

Activities may explore this year’s theme or any other topic related to the media landscape, such as disinformation, journalism, the functioning of platforms, the attention economy, stereotypes and other media representations.

Any organisation may take part in “7 Days with the Media” – including schools, libraries, companies, higher education institutions, local authorities, associations, media organisations and other public or private entities – by promoting initiatives such as debates, workshops, educational projects or campaigns that foster knowledge sharing and the development of critical and responsible media skills.

Cinema opens schools’ path to the 2026 edition

One of this year’s initiatives takes place on 13, 14, 15 and 16 April, at 11:00 a.m., at Cinema São Jorge, in Lisbon. Four free film sessions for schools will be held.

This initiative is organised by the 19th edition of the Festa do Cinema Italiano (Italian Film Festival), the cultural association Il Sorpasso and the Embassy of Italy, in collaboration with the National Cinema Plan (PNC) and GILM.

The sessions are free of charge, but ticket collection is required. For more information on registration and the programme, please consult the form.
