InfoClima strengthens the fight against climate disinformation with ESCS participation

Two workshops, around 40 ESCS students, a mural in Lisbon and communication campaigns to combat climate misinformation. The InfoClima – Youth in Action Against Climate Disinformation project has now come to an end, bringing together online the results of the work carried out throughout 2026.

The project was promoted by ZERO – Associação Sistema Terrestre Sustentável, in partnership with the School of Communication and Media Studies, of the Polytechnic University of Lisbon (ESCS-UPL) and the Lusófona University of Porto (ULP).

Its main objective was to equip young people with the tools to recognise, understand and combat disinformation about climate change.

The new website provides an overview of the project, an opportunity to revisit the activities carried out throughout the year, and access to a resources section featuring games, guides, videos and online courses on climate misinformation.

ESCS students turn knowledge into climate communication

Around 40 ESCS students from Strategic Communication (Public Relations and Corporate Communication), Climate Journalism (Journalism), and Project and Portfolio (Audiovisual and Multimedia) took part in the two workshops organised as part of InfoClima.

The first workshop focused on equipping young people with an understanding of the scientific foundations of climate change and environmental crises, as well as the mechanisms of information manipulation that undermine public debate on climate issues.

The session included contributions from journalist Vera Moutinho, who was responsible for the project at ESCS, a lecturer in Climate Journalism, and a researcher at the UNESCO Chair of Communication, Media and Information Literacy and Citizenship and LIACOM (ESCS-UPL).

In the second session, students moved from knowledge to practice, creating a communication campaign aimed at other young people to raise awareness of disinformation strategies and false narratives related to climate change.

The workshop featured Matilde Inês, a former ESCS Journalism master’s student, who shared her experience as part of the ENTR team, a European digital media project developed by RTP in partnership with other European broadcasters and aimed at young social media users.

InfoClima also included the creation of a mural about disinformation at Mercado do Forno do Tijolo, in Lisbon, in partnership with the collective yesyoucanspray and the Arroios local council, with the participation Vera Moutinho.

The results of all the work developed by the ESCS team are available on the website launched by InfoClima.

The initiative involved several faculty members from ESCS, researchers from LIACOM, and members of the team of the UNESCO Chair of Communication, Media and Information Literacy and Citizenship, working together to strengthen students’ preparedness to address the challenges of climate and media literacy.

InfoClima is supported by European funds through the Catalyst of Change programme of the Netherlands Helsinki Committee.
