UNESCO Chair

Communication, Media Information Literacy and Citizenship

The only UNESCO Chair “Communication, Media Information Literacy and Citizenship” in Portugal has been awarded to ESCS-IPL. The whole community can take part in this international project.

UNESCO has awarded the School of Communication and Media Studies (ESCS), of the Polytechnic University of Lisbon (IPL), the Chair of “Communication, Media Literacy, and Citizenship”. This chair aims to promote critical understanding of the media, empower citizens to participate actively in society and foster an ethical and democratic communication environment. The main areas of focus include advanced training in communication and citizenship, the promotion of applied research on the effects of information and media on society, and national and international cooperation for sharing best practices. All initiatives align with UNESCO’s values and mission and are grounded on the cross-cutting nature of the Education 2030 Agenda, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Medium-Term Strategy 2022-2029, and UNESCO’s actions supporting Media and Information Literacy.
